Candida & Infrared Saunas

June 25, 2008

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the role an infrared sauna can play in the treatment of excessive candida (a naturally occurring yeast that is present in all our bodies and it is supposed to be there in balance with many other microorganisms).

*In fact, a quick Google search of: +candida +"infrared sauna" returned approximately 30,000 results, indicating a hot research topic indeed.

The problem with candida, is that once this yeast proliferates in the body, it wrecks havock in many ways and is the insitigator of many common conditions and illnesses in our population.

So how could an infrared sauna possibly help with candida?

Infrared saunas are known for their detoxification properties, which are brought on by the profuse sweating produced from the penetration of infrared rays into the body. Toxins and impurities are released through this type of sweating. People who sweat can detoxify quickly.

This is the reason many candida sufferers are being encouraged by doctors and holistic practitioners to exercise often. The act of raising oxygen levels in your body, as well as producing sweat helps you rid your body of toxins.

If your candida bacteria levels are higher than normal, side effects of a yeast infection begin to manifest (odor, etc.). When the body is in a healthy state, the candida cannot develop into harmful levels.

So it would logically serve to support the notion that the increased expulsion of toxins through sweating (detoxification), would positively have a beneficial effect on the lessening of the candida bacteria, right?

Truth be told, there aren't many scientific studies done on the subject, only the dearth testimonials of sauna-users who had moderate to significant improvement through sauna use.

But we do know that bacteria have a very limited temperature range in which they can survive, so raising it just a few degrees will kill the majority of the offending bacteria. In fact, Hyperthermia could turn out to be among the most powerful anti cancer/bacteria treatments yet.

This article from the Boston Globe discusses the effects of Hyperthermia combined with traditional techniques on treating tumors.

The often misunderstood effects an "artificial fever" (produced by FIR heat) has on the immune system actually has a natural healing effect -- killing viruses and slowing bacterial growth.

I wouldn't go as far as to pull Pascal's Wager out of my hat in reference to an Infrared Sauna's ability to treat candida, but the scientific principles are sound for this type of treatment to do some good in treating candida or any other bacterial infection.
